London Fire Brigade (LFB) plans to move its headquarters from Borough to Albert Embankment when its lease ends in two years.

The Albert Embankment site, currently home to Lambeth Fire Station, was LFB’s headquarters from 1937 to 2007.

If planning and feasibility work show that Albert Embankment is unviable, the Brigade will consider a second location—Shoreditch Fire Station.

The headquarters is expected to leave its current home, a former Royal Mail sorting warehouse on Union Street in March 2027, according to a report published on January 7.

Southwark’s slowest bus routes revealed

LFB said it had struggled to sublet parts of the building to the private sector, as previously hoped, due to a lack of secure divisions between floors.

The Brigade said poor energy performance, improved accessibility requirements, and its excessive size were also reasons to relocate.

LFB submitted applications ahead of moves to the Grade-II Listed Lambeth Fire Station on Albert Embankment in 2010 and 2019 but both were unsuccessful.

Any new headquarters must ‘have a strong brand and presence to support LFB pride and purpose,’ the report said.

If plans to move back to Albert Embankment go ahead, it would mean upgraded facilities for Lambeth Fire Station and a permanent home for the London Fire Brigade Museum.

The Old Fire Brgade Head Quarters may have survived both the Luftwaffe and the Blitz but, in this modern World, nothing talks louder than Money.
Publc Bodies, Councils and Gov.t should All Remember the Old Adages: ‘All that glitters is not Gold’ … ‘Fools rush in …’ & ‘Look before you leap’.
Unfortunately, money makes the many both blind and deaf.
