Seven more primary schools in the borough have joined a government free breakfast club programme.
Two schools in Southwark, The Belham in Peckham and Crawford Primary in Camberwell, have already been offering free breakfasts for almost a year after they were selected for the pilot phase last April.
Now, the government has announced that seven additional schools in Southwark will also start offering free breakfast to pupils:
- Pilgrims’ Way Primary School
- Bird In Bush School
- Bellenden Primary School
- St George’s Church of England Primary School
- Southwark Park Primary School
- Keyworth Primary School
- St Paul’s Church of England Primary School
The schools in Southwark are among hundreds across London which have been added to the scheme, including 10 in Lambeth and 10 in Lewisham.
The scheme is backed by £80 million government funding and is targeted at the most disadvantaged areas
Nationally, more than 300,000 children will receive free breakfasts thanks to the programme this April alone.
Schools already taking part have served over 7 million breakfasts to date, saving families up to £450 per year and giving parents up to 95 hours back each year.
The government said they had evidence showing the scheme had led to improved attendance, attainment and behaviour among pupils.
They also referenced polling showing that nearly half of parents prioritise primary schools offering free breakfast clubs, while six in ten parents are more likely to access support when it is available to everyone.
Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson said: “Free breakfast clubs are revolutionising morning routines up and down the country, becoming an essential part of modern-day life for working families.
“From settling a child into the school day to helping parents get to work, free breakfast clubs are giving every child the best start in life – delivering on our plan for national renewal.
“I was raised by a single parent, so I know first-hand the struggles facing parents trying to make ends meet and how important it is to tackle outdated stigmas with practical support that people can feel every day.”
Applications are now open for a further 1,500 schools to join the programme from September, expanding access to free breakfast clubs to 680,000 children nationwide.
