Rotherhithe was graced with a royal visit on Sunday (November 16) after the Norwegian King and Queen attended a special mass at St Olav’s Church to mark 80 years since Norway was liberated from Nazi occupation.
The King of Norway, Harald V, and his wife Queen Sonja attended the Norwegian Remembrance Sunday service at St Olav’s Church on Albion Street, where they paid their respects to fallen WW2 veterans.
The King laid a poppy wreath at the foot of a bust of his grandfather King Haakon VII of Norway, who fled to London when the Nazis occupied Norway in April 1940.

This year marks 80 years since Norway was liberated from the Nazis following Germany’s surrender on 8 May 1945.
St Olav’s Church in Rotherhithe was built in 1926 to serve the growing Norwegian community in London and sailors who arrived from Scandinavia at the adjacent Surrey Docks.

The church is gearing up to host its annual Norwegian Christmas Fair this weekend which will run 21-23 November.
Revellers will be able to enjoy a taste of Norwegian cuisine, purchase a range of Nordic gifts and enjoy a programme of music, entertainment and activities for all the family to enjoy.
The opening hours are:
- Friday: 12:00 PM – 7:00 PM
- Saturday: 11:00 AM – 6:00 PM
- Sunday: 11:00 AM – 5:00 PM
