A new block of council flats has been added to the Slippers Estate in Bermondsey, writes Cristina trujillo…
This week Hester Biddle Court was confirmed complete after years of planning by Fraser Brown Mackenna architects and Glenman building contractors.
Named after a Quaker writer and activist, Hester Biddle Court is comprised of one, two and three-bedroom council homes.

Located at the corner of Stalham Street and Slippers Place, the new building includes specially designed wheelchair access.
From Southwark’s pile of rubble with a name to fully-fledged council housing, the tower block has been a hot topic in the area, with some residents concerned about loss of sunlight.
Councillor Helen Dennis, Cabinet Member for New Homes and Sustainable Development, commented: “We want everyone in Southwark to live in decent, safe and well-maintained homes, and delivering these new council homes on the Slippers Estate is a proud moment for our borough.
“Each of these homes will transform a family’s life and help tackle the housing crisis. This is why we have more than 3,000 new council homes either completed or under construction.
“We remain absolutely committed to building more genuinely affordable homes and to working with government so councils like ours can continue delivering the homes our communities desperately need.”
Hester Biddle, the new building’s namesake, lived in Bermondsey in the 1600s. She wrote and spoke in public on the role of Christians in housing the poor at a time when women were banned from public speaking.
Southwark Council has recently signed an agreement with two developers which will see at least 360 more new council homes built over the coming years.
