TOAD bakery in Camberwell is transforming into a full blown Mexican fiesta on Friday 31 October to Saturday 1 November in celebration of Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead).
Espolòn Tequila is teaming up with the team at TOAD bakery on Peckham Road in a menu and decor takeover.
The Day of the Dead is a Mexican multi-day holiday which involves family and friends gathering to pay respects to loved ones who have died.
Created with chef and food historian Chloe-Rose Crabtree, the limited-edition menu at TOAD will reimagine classic Mexican treats.
There will be Pan de Muerto (a classic “Bread of the Dead”), a filled Pan de Muerto Relleno, (savoury croissants), and a rich warm chocolate drink, Champurrado.
With food being such an integral part of the holiday, the baked goods have been inspired by the traditional bakes that are created in Mexico and then placed on ‘ofrendas’ or alters as a way to give loved ones a taste of their favourite treats.
Alongside the food, the decor will also honour the festival, with Espolòn’s calaveras (skeletons) perched outside, vibrant papel picado banners draped across the shopfront and colourful murals inspired by José Guadalupe Posada, the legendary Mexican artist whose work inspired Espolòn’s labels.
There wil also be a small run of limited edition t-shirts up for grabs.
TOAD was announced as one of six finalists in London in the prestigious National Bakery Awards last week.
Founded by Rebecca Spaven and Oliver Costello, TOAD opened in 2022 after a series of pop-ups. It specialises in fresh breads, pastries, cakes, sandwiches and filter coffee.
