MILLWALL under-21’s manager Kevin Nugent has confirmed that he will soon begin discussions with his squad to decide what the next step is for their careers.
In the last few months, some youngsters have been brought straight through into the first-team squad, like Romain Esse, while others like Alex Mitchell have been sent out on loan to gain experience away from The Den.
There is also the option to move them on permanently, with Isaac Olaofe, Besart Topalloj and Hayden Muller all thriving away from SE16.
Nugent will meet with key figures at the club, such as first-team boss Gary Rowett and Director of Football Operations and Recruitment Alex Aldridge, to figure what will be best for Millwall and their young players, with some difficult decisions likely to be made once they have played their Professional Development League play-off final against Sheffield United.
“Obviously, some of these players will be with us all through next season,” he told NewsAtDen after yesterday’s game.
“One thing that’s really moved forward in the last few years, or at least since I’ve been here, is our process of who we loan out and who we keep here to keep ourselves competitive or to link in with the first team.
“We’ve been quite successful with that this season. You look at Alex Mitchell out on loan. We’ve had numerous players that have had a bit of non-league experience as well, National League experience.
“We’ll just have to monitor what players are here and what players are not here.
“There will be big discussions coming up now, but it’s in terms of successes. You look at Hayden Muller and Bes, they’ve both gone out.
“Success for us, we look at our aftercare as an academy, it’s very important. They’ll get themselves a career in football, which again, for us, is a success as well.”
