A deaf paediatric nurse from University Hospital Lewisham has appeared on the CBBC programme Operation Ouch!, writes Tom Appleby…
Asha Hylton featured on the popular children’s show, which educates young audiences about medicine and biology.
A TV crew followed Hylton in the Paediatric Emergency Department for a day and filmed her crucial role in the hospital.
They showed the tools and communication methods she uses, such as an adaptive stethoscope, sign language interpreters, lip-reading and assistive technology.
Asha said: “I had a great time filming on Operation Ouch! I’m proud to represent LGT [the Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust] as a deaf paediatric nurse.
“There are many colleagues in the NHS who have disabilities, and it’s important that I can speak up and show them that it is possible, it can be done with the right support and access.
“I’m passionate about caring for children and young people, and many colleagues like me use adaptive technology and sign language to provide excellent care every day.”
The NHS Trust clearly values her vital contribution to the services they provide.
“Congratulations to Asha,” it said, “We are proud of the exceptional work you do every day.”
The episode is available now on BBC iPlayer Operation Ouch! – Series 14: 9. What a Rollercoaster! – BBC iPlayer.
