A prestigious youth ballet company will see two Herne Hill teenagers perform in their upcoming production next weekend, writes Melina Block.
Oliver Grinnell, fourteen, and Freya Marcuson, thirteen, were selected to join the 100-strong English Youth Ballet [EYB] in July following competitive auditions.
Both dancers train at South London Dance School and attend day schools in Dulwich.
They will be performing Cinderella in Hollywood, choreographed by English Youth Ballet’s director, Janet Lewis, at New Wimbledon Theatre.
The company has cast 100 young dancers from the local area for the show, who have been rehearsing ahead of the professional performance.
Eight principal dancers will perform alongside them, each of which has danced with major international ballet companies.
Oliver, who has been dancing since he was two, said: “I love performing on a stage and finishing a dance or show that I have been working on for a long time. It’s just so exhilarating, it feels amazing.
At EYB, I’m looking forward to performing professionally and in a real theatre and I want to learn what it’s like to do a performance with people I’ve never danced alongside before and I’d like to make friends with other dancers.”
Freya began dancing at three: “I love to dance and perform on stage. While training with EYB I’d like to become better at dance, learn more skills and be better at performing.”
English Youth Ballet’s Cinderella in Hollywood will show at New Wimbledon Theatre for three shows on November 15 and 16 – tickets can be bought here.
