Southwark Council has completed a £2 million refurbishment of its leisure centres, just in time for the New Year.
Seven locations across the borough have been upgraded with new gyms, equipment, and improved spaces.
They include The Castle Leisure Centre, Southwark Park Sports and Athletics Centre, Camberwell Leisure Centre, Surrey Docks Fitness and Watersports Centre, Peckham Pulse and Dulwich Leisure Centre.
All centres have state-of-the-art equipment with ‘virtual workout’ capabilities, dedicated cardio, weights and functional fitness zones.
Southwark Council has also launched the BOX 12 fitness experience, offering a full-body workout combining boxing and functional fitness in twelve action-packed, three-minute rounds.
The BOX 12 studio is at Camberwell, the circuit at Dulwich, with BOX 12 PODs in the gym at Peckham and The Castle Leisure Centre.
Southwark Council is also preparing for the opening of the Canada Water Leisure Centre in Spring 2025, replacing the Seven Island’s centre.
The council boasts that it will have the biggest pool in Southwark with a total surface area of 425m2 makes it larger than Seven Island’s 412.5m2.
However, residents have previously noted that at 33 metres, the Seven Islands pool is longer than the Canada Water pool, which will only stretch 25 metres.
Councillor Portia Mwangangye, Cabinet Member for Leisure, Parks and Young People, said: “These upgraded leisure centres offer our residents the ultimate facilities to stay active and healthy as we kick off the New Year! With revamped gyms and exciting, innovative features like Box 12, we’re making sure everyone—from first-timers to fitness pros—can find something they love.
“Looking ahead, the opening of the Canada Water Leisure Centre in 2025 will be a game-changer for Southwark. Boasting the borough’s largest swimming pool, cutting-edge fitness facilities, and inclusive spaces for all abilities and interests, it’s set to become a landmark destination. This investment highlights our passion and commitment to ensuring health and wellbeing are within everyone’s reach in Southwark.”
