Southwark Council completed more social rent homes than any other borough in London last year, according to new data published by the Greater London Authority (GLA).
The local authority finished 581 social rent homes in 2024, more than second-placed Haringey (547) and Greenwich (440).
Southwark also made a start on the second-highest number of social rent homes in the capital, commencing work on 363 properties last year – 12 per cent of the total started in London.
The GLA data counts homes funded under the Mayor of London’s affordable homes programme, which financed a total of 3,991 new affordable homes starts last year.

Responding to the new data, Councillor Helen Dennis, Southwark Labour spokesperson for New Homes & Sustainable Development, said: “We are proud of our record of building genuinely affordable homes for local people in our borough.
“It is clear that Labour are the only party serious about tackling the housing crisis – building new social rent homes to help our residents off the waiting list and into brand new, quality homes.”

Yet they don’t have the resources or man power to fix existing buildings that are falling apart that was built 25 years ago, especially for disabled residents, nice to see where southwark councils priorities are.
