A contractor has been appointed for a mixed-use development on Blackfriars Road that will provide new office space and affordable sheltered housing for the elderly writes Issy Clarke
JRL Group has been awarded the contract to start work on the 22 and 15-storey buildings that will be set among landscaped gardens and a new outdoor square open to the public.
JTRE London, the developer, is working with Southwark Charities to provide an Almshouse in the smaller building containing 64 affordable homes for older people and a new community centre and gardens.
Almshouses provide community-oriented affordable homes and are seen as a solution allowing older people to live independently.
The 22-storey tower will contain over 200,000 sq ft of office space inside a striking maroon and green exterior, with balconies and even a rooftop garden with views across the City skyline.
Nigel Fleming, Managing Director at JTRE London, said: “We firmly believe this will be a truly area-defining scheme, combining prime office space, affordable housing and community space.
“This builds on our strong track record in SE1 and is an example of how the private, public and charity sectors can work together to unlock much needed development.”
