Lambeth Council is rolling out a series of road changes in West Dulwich designed to encourage people to walk and cycle.
A two-way cycle lane and five zebra crossings are being installed on the stretch of Rosendale Road between Thurlow Park Road and Park Hall Street.
This is the third phase of a four-part scheme covering the Brockwell Park–Gypsy Hill route. The project forms part of the council’s Healthy Routes initiative, which aims to make walking and cycling safer across the borough.
The changes include:
- Five new zebra crossings
- A two-way protected cycle lane
- Secure cycle parking
- Dropped kerbs for accessibility
The Brockwell Park–Gypsy Hill route is divided into four phases. The first phase, between Brockwell Park and Turney Road, was completed in 2021.
Phase 2, between Turney Road and the A205 South Circular, was installed in November 2023 and included measures such as two-way cycle tracks.
Phase 3 is now proposed between the South Circular and Park Hall Street, continuing the two-way protected cycle track and adding five new zebra crossings.
The council carried out a statutory consultation on the Phase 3 proposals in August–September 2024.
A council report recommending the extension also proposed parking changes, including double yellow lines on junction corners to prevent obstructive and dangerous parking.
Cllr Rezina Chowdhury, Lambeth Council Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Sustainable Lambeth and Clean Air, said: “We are committed to creating streets and neighbourhoods that are healthy, safe, inclusive and pleasant for everyone.
“Healthy Routes help give people choice in how they travel by making sustainable options safer. They are also a boost to local high streets, as people stay local rather than driving off to larger centres.”
