The rail industry’s equivalent of the Oscars has commended a Camberwell’s Denmark Hill Station in two categories, writes Charles Harrison...
The station, run by Thameslink, was “highly commended” in the Sustainable Business Award and the Infrastructure Achievement of the Year categories at the National Rail Awards, presented in the Grosvenor Hotel on 16 September.
This comes two weeks after the station announced it was the first in Europe to use “photovoltaic” film in a new extension to produce more power than it consumes – effectively making it “carbon positive”.
The extension was opened by Rail Minister Chris Heaton-Harris and local resident, writer and TV host Sandi Toskvig.
The Minister said at the opening ceremony: “This upgrade transforms a Victorian station into a modern experience for passengers – cutting crowding, improving access, and introducing new space for cyclists and artwork.”
Other notable award winners at the National Rail Awards included the Outstanding Personal Contribution Judges Special Award, given to Dr Illeana St Claire for her work in keeping the Govia Thameslink Railway service running through lockdown while keeping to coronavirus restrictions.
