A peer-to-peer support group is being launched in Kennington to help fathers navigate the challenges of pre and postnatal life and foster a sense of togetherness, writes Grace Wiszowaty…
The initiative, which is being sponsored by the UK’s leading prenatal mental health charity, the PANDAS Foundation, aims to provide local dads with a safe and stigma-free space to share their experiences of fatherhood and support one another.
According to research provided by the PANDAS Foundation, one in ten new fathers experience perinatal mental health difficulties however, there are often minimal forums or support groups for them to share their anxieties.
Through bringing local fathers together, the sessions aim to help build resilience, reduce isolation and help prevent future mental health breakdowns.
A representative for the PANDAS Foundation said: “We are incredibly proud and excited to welcome on board our newest group in Kennington to this wonderful charity.
“We know through the work that we have already carried out in many other areas of the UK how invaluable our face-to-face support groups are in supporting the local community.”
Any father living or working in Kennington or Lambeth is welcome to attend, with the sessions being free of charge. They are welcome to bring their babies or toddlers along, too.
The first session will take place on June 11 from 11:30pm to 12:30pm and will operate on a monthly basis at Bee Urban, St Agnes Place.
