Better Bankside has announced the appointment of Leo Charleson, saying he joins the Business Improvement District at a ‘pivotal’ time for its ambitious plans to physically change streets in the area, writes Romilly Schulte...
His role will include working on an urban art collaboration with the Tate Modern, plans to develop America Street and reimagine the Hope Exchange, and the Low Line – an initiative which aims to transform unused Victorian railway arches into business and cultural spaces.
Charleson, a geography graduate from the University of Manchester, has worked in a variety of sustainable infrastructure roles, including experience working with other BIDS.
“Joining Better Bankside is a fantastic opportunity to shape one of the most unique neighbourhoods of London. I’m excited about leading our forthcoming placemaking projects and ensuring we’re pushing the boundaries of what a BID can achieve.
“For me, it’s about making a tangible difference – creating streets that feel more vibrant and resilient. There’s a distinct energy here, and I’m excited to play my part in making Bankside an even better place to work and live.”
Nicole Gordon, CEO of Better Bankside added: “Leo impressed us with both his technical expertise and his clear commitment to creating happiness-oriented places.
“His experience delivering environmentally conscious projects, combined with his enthusiasm for Bankside’s unique character, makes him a fantastic addition to the team. We are excited to see how his vision and energy will help shape the next phase of our placemaking work.”
Better Bankside is a BID, which means it is an area in which business rate payers, if eligible, are charged an extra levy which is used to develop projects which the benefit the local area.
