ALEX Neil insisted Millwall’s defeat to Blackburn Rovers did not hurt more despite costing the Lions the chance to climb into the automatic promotion places.
The Lions started the day third in the Championship, and a last-minute Bristol City equaliser against Middlesbrough earlier in the day meant a win would have seen Millwall climb into the automatic promotion places
They were well on course to do so, leading 1-0 through Luke Cundle’s clever finish, before Zak Sturge was controversially sent off on the hour mark.
Substitute Mathias Jorgensen then struck twice within six minutes as Rovers denied the ten-man Lions the three points.
To make matters worse, Ipswich Town scored twice late on to beat Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough, meaning Millwall finished the day in fourth.
Asked about the missed chance to go second, Neil said: “People keep saying that to me. I don’t really care about that, if I’m honest.”
“Every defeat hurts, trust me. Doesn’t matter whether you lose with ten men, you lose with eleven men, or you can go second, or you can go whatever. It makes no difference.
“I’ll tell you when it would’ve hurt if we could’ve gone second. If it were the last game of the season, it would hurt then because there’s nothing I can do about it.
“We’ve got eight games left. We were never going to win anything today, and we were never going to lose anything today.
“Have we lost a little bit of ground? Yeah. Part of that’s on us. Part of that’s on decisions that unfortunately went against us today.”
