Well done lads!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Councillor bares all for Evelina:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-14882 size-full\" keep his clothes ON.<\/p>\n<p>He said he felt compelled to compete with rival councillor Mark Gettleson, who got his kit OFF as part of the News\u2019 Full Monty performance.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Council leader spends day in the life of his staff:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Southwark Council leader Peter John spent a day taking on some of his staff\u2019s toughest jobs, from sifting through filthy rubbish, to catching rats and cleaning the town hall, to drum up cash for the appeal.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Waste wonder:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The \u2018secret world\u2019 of recycling was unveiled over the course of a weekend at Southwark\u2019s waste plant, and a lucky visitor scooped tickets to Paris and lunch at the Eiffel Tower.<\/p>\n<p>Over \u00a3205 was raised for the appeal, with more than 500 people turning up to explore the site, which was opened as part of Open House weekend.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mayor\u2019s charity ball:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-14884\" src=\"http:\/\/southwarknews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2017\/02\/Mayors-ball0102.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"900\" height=\"526\" mayoral year, then Southwark mayor Abdul Mohammed raised more than \u00a38,000 for the appeal.<\/p>\n<p>The raffle and the auction raised more than \u00a34,000, which was then matched by Barclays Bank to double the total.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Southwark Metal goes above and beyond:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In April 2014 the generosity of a family run Bermondsey firm gave the News appeal for Evelina a massive boost.<\/p>\n<p>After visiting the children\u2019s hospital with the News a month earlier Tom Pratt from Southwark Metal wrote a cheque for \u00a320,000 taking our target well over the half way mark.<\/p>\n<p>Based on the Old Kent Road, this scrap metal business started off in a yard in Borough in1980 with one shed, one elderly employee named Albert and an Alsatian called Oi, but is now a multi-million business, with a share in Westminster Waste.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvelina is not new to us,\u201d Tom said at the time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy dad was treated there as a child when he was just seven or eight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Construction firm donates to Evelina:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Construction firm Standage, who were working on a Bermondsey estate at the time, handed over a \u00a3200 donation for the Evelina Appeal to St Saviour\u2019s resident Audrey Lupton.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Charlie Chaplin\u00a0fun run:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" their bowler hats and walking sticks to help raise cash for the Evelina appeal during a sponsored Charlie Chaplin run down Walworth Road to celebrate the legend\u2019s birthday.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Blue Market Square:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Publicans Julie and Moss O\u2019Sullivan, who run the Old Bank pub on Southwark Park Road, hosted a fundraising event at the Blue Market Square, drafting in punters and local businesses to help raise \u00a33,000 for the appeal.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Channel Swim:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-14887\" src=\"http:\/\/southwarknews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2017\/02\/Channel-swim-team.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"900\" height=\"521\" srcset=\"https:\/\/southwarknews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Channel-swim-team.jpg 900w, https:\/\/southwarknews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Channel-swim-team-484x280.jpg 484w, https:\/\/southwarknews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Channel-swim-team-768x445.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A team of six swam the English Channel \u2013 more than 32 miles \u2013 in 14 hours and 37 minutes, with three of the team undertaking two hour-long shifts, two of the team undertaking three each, and the final member completing two and then a final 37 minutes to reach the shore at Cap Griz Nez.<\/p>\n<p>The gang found the swim to be an amazing experience \u2013 and managed to raise \u00a38,000 for the appeal.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Chris\u2019 marathon effort\u00a0for Evelina:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>News MD Chris Mullany, who launched the Evelina appeal, completed six fundraising events over the four years, and helped to raise some \u00a320,000 towards the total.<\/p>\n<p>Chris flew out to the Sahara desert in April last year to take part in the gruelling 160-mile Marathon des Sables &#8211; the toughest footrace on earth. The race took place over seven days, with competitors facing temperatures of up to 120 degrees Fahrenheit, while they scaled dune fields and djebels rising to the height of Ben Nevis.<\/p>\n<p>Competitors had to carry ten kilo rucksacks, with all their food for the week, clothes, sleeping bag and medical kit, including a venom pump and a signalling mirror and flare. Organisers said it was the hottest, hardest and longest one yet, with 140 people dropping out or being evacuated out of a starting field of some 1200. Chris lost a stone in a week, but finished 553rd, just making the top half of the field, and managed to raise more than \u00a33,000.<\/p>\n<p>He also led the team Channel swim, (left), swam the three mile Hellespont strait between Europe and Asia, completed the News team Three Peaks in under 24 hours, and in the space of a month climbed the highest peak in Africa, Mount Kilimanjaro, and cycled from London to Paris in 24 hours.<\/p>\n<p>All of his challenges were financed by himself, with all monies raised going to Evelina.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat we\u2019ve raised is just a drop in the ocean &#8211; and the Evelina will always need local support,&#8221; Chris said. \u201cTheir needs don\u2019t stop because we\u2019ve hit this target &#8211; so please get in touch with us if you have any fundraising ideas!\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Picture perfect:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Former Southwark Council chief executive Annie Shepperd paid Dan Martin, head of design at Southwark News, \u00a3450 for an oil on canvas painting of her granddaughter Chloe.<\/p>\n<p>The fee went straight to the children\u2019s hospital. It took around 30 hours to paint Chloe, sitting in Annie\u2019s back garden in Nunhead.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Three Peaks Challenge:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" Oli Pugh, reporters Laura Burgoine, Reena Kumar and John Prendergast, Brunswick Park Labour councillor Mark Williams, and Siobhan Keane, from Arment\u2019s Pie &amp; Mash in back.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kind-hearted knitters:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>St Peter\u2019s Church, in Liverpool Grove, Walworth, knitted small blankets for premature babies to match the measurements of an
