Skipping also got a mention and her love for playing football: \u2018If I was young now I\u2019d be a Lioness,\u2019 she claims with confidence.<\/p><script type=\"text\/plain\" data-tcf=\"waiting-for-consent\" data-id=\"71156\" data-bid=\"1\" data-placement=\"448386\" data-no-track=\"impressions\">PGRpdiBpZD0ic291dGgtMzA4ODQ3NzY2MiIgY2xhc3M9InNvdXRoLWluLWFydGljbGUtbXB1OSBzb3V0aC1lbnRpdHktcGxhY2VtZW50Ij48IS0tICAvMTU0NzI1MDcwLDIyNjk0MTk2OTY5L3NvdXRod2Fya25ld3Mvc291dGh3YXJrbmV3cyAtLT4NCjxkaXYgaWQ9ImRpdi1ncHQtYWQtbXB1OSI+DQo8c2NyaXB0Pg0KZ29vZ2xldGFnLmNtZC5wdXNoKGZ1bmN0aW9uKCkgeyBnb29nbGV0YWcuZGlzcGxheSgnZGl2LWdwdC1hZC1tcHU5Jyk7IH0pOw0KPC9zY3JpcHQ+DQo8L2Rpdj4gICAgIDwvZGl2Pg==<\/script>\n\n\n\n<p>Family holidays would be spent at \u2018quirky places that Mum found, which was great because we went all over the place and somewhere different every year,\u2019 Ann ran off a list that included, Kingsdown, Isle of Wight, Hastings, Scotland and Germany. \u2018Me and my brother Michael had a nice childhood, we done lots of things as a family.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ann\u2019s education began in Kintore Way nursery and then Alma School where she left with very fond memories of teachers, all of whom she name-checks and even recalls some of the lessons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ann was a big fan of history and all the sports on offer, and these loves continued at secondary school, Aylwin: \u2018I captained the hockey team,\u2019 she says proudly, and tells of a Miss Killick who instilled in Ann a love of science and biology, both of which eventually featured greatly in her life despite the Careers Officer laughing at her when she said she wanted to work in those areas. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018Bermondsey girls were expected to go into typing or hairdressing,\u2019 she remembers. \u2018That was our career options because we were from Bermondsey.\u2019<\/p><script type=\"text\/plain\" data-tcf=\"waiting-for-consent\" data-id=\"71157\" data-bid=\"1\" data-placement=\"448387\" data-no-track=\"impressions\">PGRpdiBpZD0ic291dGgtMzg4OTg3NTgxMiIgY2xhc3M9InNvdXRoLWluLWFydGljbGUtbXB1LTEwIHNvdXRoLWVudGl0eS1wbGFjZW1lbnQiPjwhLS0gIC8xNTQ3MjUwNzAsMjI2OTQxOTY5Njkvc291dGh3YXJrbmV3cy9zb3V0aHdhcmtuZXdzIC0tPg0KPGRpdiBpZD0iZGl2LWdwdC1hZC1tcHUxMCI+DQo8c2NyaXB0Pg0KZ29vZ2xldGFnLmNtZC5wdXNoKGZ1bmN0aW9uKCkgeyBnb29nbGV0YWcuZGlzcGxheSgnZGl2LWdwdC1hZC1tcHUxMCcpOyB9KTsNCjwvc2NyaXB0Pg0KPC9kaXY+ICAgICA8L2Rpdj4=<\/script>\n\n\n\n<p>While at Alma School, Ann was introduced to the Girl Guides: \u2018The 3rd North Bermondsey Group &#8211; Forget-Me-Not Patrol,\u2019 she recalls with her chin up and shoulders back. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018I loved being a Guide,\u2019 adds the woman who, many years later when her own daughter Katherine joined, marched right back into that world by helping out at camp before then becoming a Guide Leader, and the District Commissioner\u2026 Ann would still be there if it wasn\u2019t for her mother\u2019s current health problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ann left Sixth Form with CSEs and \u2018O\u2019 Levels and joined the world of work. After a summer in a Bermondsey Street chemist\u2019s she applied for an apprenticeship with the ILEA as a Science Technician, which involved three days at college and two days working in a school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This was the beginning of lifelong learning for Ann in her chosen career that took in many exams, many schools across London(including several in Southwark), a degree, and finds her now as Senior Science Technician at Bishop Thomas Grant School in Streatham, where she has been for 25 years. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She says of her work: \u2018The best thing is the fulfilment you get from seeing the kids reach their potential &#8211; whatever level that is &#8211; there\u2019s no other job like it\u2026 The rewards from it are astronomical.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When school gave way to going out as grown-ups, Ann could be found in the Tiger Tavern on Tower Hill, The Fellmongers or The Victoria drinking \u2018Cinzano and lemonade\u2019 she laughs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018In the late 70s we would go to \u201cThe Best Disco in Town\u201d in the Lyceum.\u201d And, of course, there were several Old Kent Road pubs that Ann and her friends would also frequent in its heyday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-wp-embed is-provider-southwark-news wp-block-embed-southwark-news\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<span class=\"zWEfwcL7kb4stD5aF9q3O2AUrB8X0Sdi6HmNRGyKM1QxvPVnhjCoeuZplY\"><blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"fCPyv51HET\"><a href=\"https:\/\/southwarknews.co.uk\/news\/community\/there-used-to-be-37-pubs-on-old-kent-road-now-theres-only-two\/\">There used to be 37 pubs on Old Kent Road, now there&#8217;s only two<\/a><\/blockquote><iframe class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"&#8220;There used to be 37 pubs on Old Kent Road, now there&#8217;s only two&#8221; &#8212; Southwark News\" src=\"https:\/\/southwarknews.co.uk\/news\/community\/there-used-to-be-37-pubs-on-old-kent-road-now-theres-only-two\/embed\/#?secret=jvEgOeVix6#?secret=fCPyv51HET\" data-secret=\"fCPyv51HET\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/span>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Ann Hatch met Colin Smith at the squash club in the Elephant &amp; Castle Leisure Centre when she went with a friend and Colin went with his. They became closer and, miraculously, the two teams married each other! In due course, Colin, a true gentleman, got down on one knee in Davy\u2019s Wine Bar, Greenwich, and proposed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018He did it all proper, he asked my mum and dad for my hand in marriage first.\u2019 They had their wedding in St James\u2019s Church, where Ann\u2019s parents wed, and their reception on a barge on the Thames.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-1 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-id=\"195173\" src=\"https:\/\/southlondon.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/ann-as-a-guide-whatsapp-image-2025-08-13-at-12.01.42-7-768x1024.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-195173\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-id=\"195176\" src=\"https:\/\/southlondon.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/ann-wedding-dsc_0641-1024x998.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-195176\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-id=\"195175\" src=\"https:\/\/southlondon.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/ann-in-the-science-lab-whatsapp-image-2025-08-18-at-14.17.28-1024x889.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-195175\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Their first home was in Blick House, Neptune Street, before moving to their current home on the Rotherhithe Peninsular where Surrey Docks once serviced the ships that brought and departed with cargo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The wanderlust her mum instilled into her, Ann has passed on to her own children, Katherine and James.
