The brigade was inundated with calls after passengers on a train passing through Deptford were shocked to see a block of flats alight this week, writes Frankie Hills…

Six fire engines and around 40 firefighters attended the scene at Childers Street, in Deptford, after a fire broke out on Tuesday evening.

Footage shared of the fire on social media shows clouds of smoke billowing from the property.

London Fire Brigade (LFB) received the first of 15 calls at around 7pm, with crews from Deptford, New Cross, Old Kent Road and surrounding fire stations responded to reports of several balconies at the six-storey building being alight.

The fire was brought under control by fire crews just after 8pm, with crews remaining on sight til it was fully extinguished.

The cause of the fire is still being investigating, although the brigade said the fire is believed to have been caused by the unsafe disposal of smoking materials.

Around 50 people were evacuated from the building to a nearby community centre, and LFB have confirmed that no injuries have been reported.

Three flats, located on the second, third and fourth floors of the building were in-part damaged by the fire, with the balconies of each flat being destroyed. Meanwhile, the decking on a flat roof on the first floor was also damaged.

An LFB spokesperson stated: “If you smoke it is vitally important you stub it right out, preferably in an ashtray. Always ensure your cigarette is completely out when you’ve finished smoking it. If you don’t, you risk causing a fire.
