Alex Neil believes his Millwall side have produced one of the club’s best seasons in decades as they stand on the brink of the Championship play-offs.
The Lions are nine points clear of seventh-placed Wrexham and can confirm a top-six finish on Saturday if they beat Queens Park Rangers and results elsewhere go their way.
It would be just the club’s fourth appearance in the Championship play-offs, with the last coming in 2001-02. Millwall have lost in the semi-finals on all three previous occasions.
If the Lions win the play-off final, they would become just the second side in the club’s history to achieve promotion to the top flight after John Docherty’s Division Two-winning side of 1987-88.
Neil was asked what has been behind Millwall’s success this season.
“We sold our player of the year this season,” Neil said. “We started the season with Japhet [Tanganga] playing for us. We sold him for a large sum of money to a competitor within the league, Sheffield United. Then we’ve still managed to achieve what we’ve done.
“We’ve won 50 per cent of our games. Only Coventry have won more games than us this season. I don’t know if it’s still the case, but we certainly had the highest clean sheets in the league. We’ve just come off the back of whether it’s fourteen, fifteen or sixteen games where we’ve scored consecutively. That was a talking point certainly last year about our lack of goals and how much can we carry a threat.
“When you combine all those things, it’s not a coincidence that we are where we are. The squad have done extremely well. Big moments in games we’ve produced more often than not. Big moments when question marks have been asked of us more often than not this year, we’ve come up with answers.
“We went to places like Ipswich and got a point. We went to Middlesbrough and got three points. We beat Derby at home, which is a big game for us. We beat Hull away from home. We beat Wrexham away from home. We’ve got the best away record in the league.
“There are loads of things to love about this team. Individually, they’re great lads. Collectively, they’re a brilliant group. In my opinion, they’ve given Millwall fans certainly one of the best seasons they’ve had in decades. Enjoy what we’re doing right now. Let’s try get behind each other and support the team for the remaining fixtures.”
