The Una Marson Library in Walworth will host a special Spanish-language storytelling event this Saturday April 11, writes Myfanwy Fleming-Jones…
The library, which open just two years ago as part of the redevelopment of the sprawling Aylesbury estate, is welcoming families for an afternoon of stories connecting them to one another and Spanish culture.
Walworth, alongside Elephant & Castle, Kennington and Stockwell is now home a vibrant Spanish and Latin American community. This event is aimed at children aged 3-10 and their families and is designed to help children connect with their emotions storytelling while enjoying the magic of stories in their native or second language.
Organised by La Tundrita Children’s Bookshop, La Tundra Revista, and the London Spanish Book & Zine Fair, the event will feature Teresa Martini, an Argentine author known for her 12-book children’s series Toto and His Extraordinary Discoveries.
At the heart of the session is a touching story about courage: Toto is afraid of the dark. With the help of his friend Little Paws, he learns to find his own inner light, a light so powerful it makes all shadows disappear. The story explores fear and how we can overcome it by reconnecting with our inner strength.
The event will take place on Saturday 11 April from 2:30pm to 3:30pm, as part of celebrations for the National Year of Reading.
Attendance is free, though advance registration is required. Copies of the book will also be available to purchase on the day.
Spanish-speaking families are especially encouraged to attend, though the event is open to anyone interested in bilingual storytelling and children’s literature.
The library on 62 Thurlow Street was named after poet, playwright and the BBC’s first black radio producer Una Marson.
La Tundra Revista, established in 2011, is a UK-based platform promoting Spanish-language literature and culture through bookshops, workshops, and community events.
The London Spanish Book & Zine Fair has been supporting independent publishing since 2019, with its 8th edition set to take place on 3 October at Conway Hall in London.
