This Friday lanterns will illuminate Southwark Park once more as Bermondsey gears up for its annual community parade.
The Illuminate Rotherhithe and Bermondsey Lantern Procession will depart from the Blue Market at 5 pm on Friday, 21 November before heading to Southwark Park.
Traders from the Blue Market will be working late providing visitors with warming refreshments including hot pies and baked potatoes.
Crowds will be escorted through the streets by event stewards and the St. Michael’s College Samba Band before arriving at the park for 6 pm.
Once there, the band-stand will be decorated with lights and live music will be played as visitors hold up lanterns which they have created over the course of workshops held throughout October and November.

There will be a last-minute lantern-making workshop for anyone who hasn’t had a chance to get to one of the workshops already at 4 pm in the Blue Market on Friday.
The Illuminate Rotherhithe and Bermondsey procession aims to celebrate migration by bringing people together to share a common moment.

It was started by local residents in 2019 and was expanded to encompass Bermondsey in 2019 as the festival grew in popularity.
The organisers said on the website: “The overarching theme for Illuminate continues to be the local history of migration, celebrating the many cultural contributions that make up the community of Bermondsey and Rotherhithe today.”
